Tour Overview
The 5-day Marangu Route is the most classic and established way to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. Often referred to as the “Coca-Cola Route,” it is the only route that offers overnight stays in mountain huts instead of camping. The trail approaches from the southeastern side of the mountain and follows a steady, well-defined path through rainforest, moorland, and alpine desert landscapes. The gradual ascent makes it a popular choice for climbers seeking a shorter and more straightforward trek.
Itinerary
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), you will be met by our company representative outside the arrivals area. After a warm welcome and short briefing, you’ll be transferred by private vehicle to your hotel in Arusha Town, located at the base of Mount Meru. Once checked in at your hotel, you’ll have time to rest and freshen up after your flight. Later in the evening, meet your Head Guide for a detailed pre-climb orientation covering safety procedures, daily expectations, packing check, and route overview. This is the best time to ask any last-minute questions before your adventure begins.
Accommodation: Venus Premier Hotel (Bed & Breakfast)
Drive time: Approx. 1.5 hours from Kilimanjaro Airport to Arusha
Elevation: 1,800m – 2,700m
Distance: 9 km
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
After breakfast, depart Arusha at around 8:00 am for Marangu Gate (1,800m), the starting point of your Kilimanjaro climb. The drive passes through local villages and lush farmland, offering a glimpse into Tanzanian rural life.
Upon arrival, complete park registration formalities while porters organize the gear. Begin your hike through dense tropical rainforest, home to colobus monkeys, exotic birds, and ancient trees draped in moss. The trail ascends gradually, making it a good warm-up day.
Arrive at Mandara Hut (2,700m) in the late afternoon. After check-in, enjoy tea or coffee before a short acclimatization walk to Maundi Crater, where you can admire views of northern Tanzania and Kenya on a clear day.
Accommodation: Mandara Hut (Dormitory Style)
Elevation: 2,700m – 3,720m
Distance: 12 km
Hiking Time: 6–7 hours
Habitat: Moorland
After a hearty mountain breakfast, the trail leaves the forest and enters the heath and moorland zone, where vegetation becomes sparser and the air cooler. Along the way, enjoy spectacular views of Mawenzi Peak, Kilimanjaro’s jagged secondary summit, and catch your first glimpse of Kibo Peak, the snow-capped main crater.
You’ll stop for lunch midway and continue climbing gently across open moorland. Arrive at Horombo Hut (3,720m) in the afternoon — this is one of the most scenic camps on the route. The view of both peaks, Kibo and Mawenzi, at sunset is unforgettable.
In the evening, enjoy a warm dinner while your guide checks on your health and oxygen levels to ensure proper acclimatization.
Accommodation: Horombo Hut (Dormitory Style)
Elevation: 3,720m – 4,700m
Distance: 8 km
Hiking Time: 6–7 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Today’s trek ascends steadily through the high alpine desert, a stark, moon-like landscape known as The Saddle, stretching between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. Vegetation is scarce here, and the temperatures drop as you gain altitude.
This is a long, steady climb with beautiful views of the surrounding volcanic terrain. Upon reaching Kibo Hut (4,700m), you’ll rest, have an early dinner, and prepare for your summit attempt.
Your guide will brief you on summit night — what to wear, how to pace yourself, and what to expect. Go to bed early to get enough rest before the midnight departure.
Accommodation: Kibo Hut (Dormitory Style)
Elevation: 4,700m – 5,895m – 3,720m
Distance: 6 km ascent + 14 km descent
Time: 10–12 hours total
Habitat: Arctic (Summit) / Moorland (Lower
This is the most challenging and rewarding day of the climb. You’ll wake up around 11:00 PM and begin your ascent under a starlit sky. The climb is steep over volcanic scree, with short zigzag sections to manage the gradient.
After approximately 5–6 hours, reach Gilman’s Point (5,686m) on the crater rim — a major achievement! Rest briefly, enjoy a breathtaking sunrise over Mawenzi, and continue for about 1.5–2 hours along the rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa.
Take time for photos and to savor your accomplishment before beginning your descent back to Kibo Hut for refreshments, then continue down to Horombo Hut for a well-deserved rest.
